Two people are in police custody for
allegedly using Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha Wafula’s name to
defraud Kenyans seeking opportunities and services in the ministry.
The
Ministry of Health, in a statement released on Wednesday, said the pair; Edith
Khaemba and Samuel Moli, were nabbed at Afya House by detectives who had been
on their radar.
“Law
enforcement authorities achieved a significant breakthrough today as they
successfully executed a meticulously planned sting operation, leading to the
prompt apprehension of two individuals involved in suspected impersonation,” read
the statement.
“The
police orchestrated an operation that strategically lured the suspects to a
predetermined location, ensuring their swift arrest.”
The
arrests of the duo come after the Health CS vowed to weed
out corrupt individuals in the health sector.
During
the launch of EACC's report on Corruption and Unethical Conduct in Kenyan
Healthcare Projects on Wednesday, CS Wafula disclosed that her initial
attempts to have the commission investigate malpractices at the Kenya Medical
Supplies Authority (KEMSA) were met with resistance by some high-ranking
officials within her ministry.
EACC is
currently investigating irregularities in the awarding of a tender for the
procurement of anti-mosquito nets at KEMSA.
