Three people died on the spot after a matatu they were traveling in veered off the road on Saturday afternoon on the Makindu-Wote Road.

The right front tyre is reported to have burst causing the 14-seater matatu to roll several times at Mbuvo in Kathonzweni.

Makueni police boss Jospeh Ole Napeiyan said his officers established that the matatu was overtaking another vehicle when the incident occurred at around 3.30pm.

Napeiyan urged drivers to be cautious on the road and adhere to traffic rules to avoid such accidents.

He hinted that the matatu was overloaded which is in violation of the COVID-19 rules from the Ministry of Health.

Those injured were taken to Makueni Level 4 Hospital while the bodies of the deceased are at mortuary within the same facility.
