Mwea MP Mary Maingi has urged the government to increase investment in grassroots sports development to help young people turn their talents into professional careers and employment opportunities.

Speaking during the Mwea Super Cup Season 4 finals in Kirinyaga County, Maingi called on the Ministry of Sports, through the Kenya Academy of Sports, to establish structured talent development programmes that would provide young athletes with professional training, mentorship and pathways to competitive sports.

The legislator said local tournaments had demonstrated the abundance of sporting talent among young people, but warned that inadequate support structures continued to limit their chances of pursuing professional careers.

“Grassroots competitions have shown us that the talent exists. The challenge is creating a system that helps young people develop that talent and access opportunities beyond local tournaments,” Maingi said.

“We need government support to establish structured training programmes that prepare our young people for professional sports and open up opportunities for employment and economic empowerment.”

She further called for partnerships between the Ministry of Sports, the Kenya Academy of Sports and other stakeholders to strengthen talent identification and development at the grassroots level.

Her remarks came as Thiba Youngsters emerged champions of the men's category after defeating Kiamanyeki FC 2-1 in the tournament final.

In the women's category, Mutithi Queens secured the title following a 1-0 victory over Kutus Queens.

Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko, who also attended the event, underscored the importance of sports in promoting mental wellness and keeping young people engaged in productive activities.

“Sports play an important role in promoting mental wellness among our young people. Tournaments such as the Mwea Super Cup provide a sense of belonging, encourage positive social interaction and keep our youth meaningfully engaged in activities that build discipline, confidence and resilience,” Ayieko said.

The Mwea Super Cup, organised annually by Maingi, brings together local football teams in a competition aimed at nurturing sporting talent, empowering young people and promoting community cohesion.
