Kabras Sugar RFC head
coach Carlos Katywa credited his squad's vast experience for the fifth
consecutive Kenya Cup win after a hard-fought 14-8 victory over KCB RFC at the
Kakamega Showgrounds on Saturday.
Kabras were pushed to the
limit by their long-time rivals and trailed early after KCB slotted a penalty
in a tightly contested first half. As pressure mounted, the defending champions
leaned on the composure and championship pedigree that have become their trademark.
“It was a tough encounter
against our rivals KCB, but I remained confident because of the experience in
my team. We just made sure we tire their legs in the first half because I knew
the boys would come back strongly, especially in the second half. I salute KCB
for being worthy opponents,” said Katywa.
The turning point came
with the introduction of Ntabeni Dukisa in the 35th minute. The influential
fly-half calmly slotted three penalties to swing momentum in Kabras’ favour,
while Eric Cantona added a crucial try to complete the comeback.
On the other side KCB RFC
head coach Andrew Amonde acknowledged that his youthful side had shown
tremendous spirit but ultimately lacked the experience required to overcome the
serial champions.
“We put up a spirited
fight, but we could not match the experience of Kabras. I have a young team,
and hopefully they will come back stronger next season,” said Amonde.
The victory further
cements Kabras RFC’s status as the dominant force in Kenyan rugby, with
experience once again proving to be their greatest weapon when it mattered
most.
