Gor Mahia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Garde Republicaine of Djibouti in their final Group A match of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup at Kigali Pele Stadium on Thursday night, topping the group on goal difference and booking their place in the semifinals.
Striker Paul Okoth proved the hero for K'Ogalo, netting the
all-important goal in the 4th minute to give the Kenyan champions an early lead
they would defend resolutely for the remainder of the contest.
The victory saw Gor Mahia finish level on six points with
both Vipers SC of Uganda and APR FC of Rwanda, but K'Ogalo emerged as group
winners courtesy of a superior goal difference.
Gor Mahia had opened their campaign with a stunning 5-0
demolition of APR before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Vipers, a result that
had left their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
With the victory, K'Ogalo now advance to the semifinals
where they will face either Rayon Sport of Rwanda or Singida Big Stars of Tanzania.
Both teams have enjoyed strong campaigns in Group C, with
Rayon Sport and Al Hilal SC locked on six points each heading into their final
group match
Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor had demanded character and
determination from his players ahead of the decisive encounter, and his side
delivered when it mattered most.
