Embakasi East Member
of Parliament Babu Owino has dismissed claims by former Nairobi County Chief
Officer Geoffrey Mosiria that he has a secret second wife and their child, both of
whom he has allegedly abandoned and are living in squalor.
Owino identified
Fridah Muthoni Ongili as his one and only wife and challenged Mosiria to publicly
identify the woman and child in question.
“My wife is not
worried about that because she knows me; she knows the person she got married
to. I’m married to Fridah Muthoni Ongili, that is my wife. Any other wife that
I’m being given by Mosiria, I want that wife to be brought out in public,” he
said.
Owino said his
upbringing had shaped his views on parental responsibility, recalling that he
was raised by a single mother following his father’s death when he was in Class
Three.
The MP said he
understood the challenges faced by single mothers in providing food, education,
clothing, medical care and housing for their children, arguing that he could
not knowingly allow any of his children to endure similar hardships.
“As Babu Owino, I
cannot leave any of my children out there. Why would I feed people’s children
before feeding my own child?” he posed, during an interview on Thee Alfa House YouTube channel.
He challenged the
woman, if she exists, to approach the courts to seek support for the child,
arguing that legal proceedings would be an appropriate avenue to establish
parental responsibility.
“You would’ve
heard of these cases in court by now. That lady would’ve gone to court,” Owino
said.
The Mwananchi
Party (TMP) leader maintained that he was willing to take responsibility for
any child confirmed to be his, regardless of where they lived.
“If there’s any of
my children anywhere; let alone Kenya, in Africa or the whole world – I want
all my kids. A child is a blessing from God; you can’t punish a child,” he
said.
