Two pedestrians have died, and three others sustained injuries after a motorist lost control of a vehicle and rammed into people at a stage along Ngong Road early Thursday morning.

The vehicle was later set ablaze by an angry crowd, with the wreckage taken to Karen Police Station.

Among the injured was a Grade 9 pupil at Milimani Primary School who was rescued and taken to hospital but later managed to attend school and sit her KPSEA examinations.

The crash occurred at about 6:40 a.m. along Ngong Road at the Wahuu Road junction, popularly known as Kenol Stage. The driver, who was heading from the Karen direction towards the city centre, reportedly veered to the extreme left and struck pedestrians waiting at the stage.

Two people died at the scene: 16-year-old Hafsa Mohammed and 29-year-old Lianzika John. Their bodies were taken to the City Mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.

Three others sustained injuries; among them, 15-year-old Patrick Wambua who suffered a fractured right leg and a head injury, while 16-year-old Anna Nyambura sustained chest and hip pain, as well as bruises on her right hand. An adult, Patricia Muhalia, sustained minor injuries.

Nyambura, a Grade 9 pupil at Milimani Primary School, was among those hit by the vehicle. Despite her injuries, she later sat her examinations. The other two injured victims remain under treatment at Coptic Hospital.

“Nasomea Milimani grade 9... nliamka nikaenda stage kuchukua gari na nikiwa nimesimama gari, ikakuja ikanipitanisha ikanirusha kwa mtaro halafu wababa wengine wakakuja wakanichukua nikaskia wawili wamekufa,” Nyambura explained.

Members of the public prevented a breakdown truck from recovering the damaged vehicle and set it on fire. The wreckage was later towed to Karen Police Station for inspection.

The driver is receiving treatment and is expected to be arraigned upon discharge.

Citizen TV later spoke to Nyambura at her home in Ngando, a short distance from where she was hit, after she completed her examination.

“Nilienda hospitali hii iko Adams Nairobi womens alafu teacher wa agriculture akakuja kunichukua nikapelekwa shulke kufanya mtihani nilikuwa kwa room pekeangu na ilikuwa subject ya science social studies na CS nilikuwa naogopa kurepeat,” she said.

Vehicle inspection and post-mortem examinations are expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the crash.
