Form Three student dies 5 months after being stabbed while breaking up classroom fight

A Form Three student from Ruthimitu Mixed Secondary School in Dagoretti South, who was brutally stabbed while trying to maintain peace in his classroom, has tragically passed away following a five-month battle for his life.

The deceased, 17-year-old class prefect Alex Owegi Ariango, died on September 1, 2026 due to severe internal medical complications arising directly from the stabbing incident.

Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirmed the cause of death following a post-mortem examination, establishing a definitive forensic link between the April 2026 assault and his ultimate demise.

Speaking on behalf of the grieving family, relative Margaret Ariango reiterated the pathologist's findings, noting that the young prefect succumbed to progressive health failures triggered by the catastrophic stomach wounds he sustained.

According to school witnesses and police at Kabete Police station, Alex was acting in his official capacity as a prefect when he stepped in to break up a violent altercation between two of his classmates.

During the intervention, one of the disputing students pulled out a concealed knife and plunged it twice into Alex's stomach before fleeing the school grounds.

The attack left the teenager in critical condition, with the weapon piercing his side, kidney, and main intestine.

Amid allegations from fellow students regarding a delayed emergency response by the school administration, a Good Samaritan eventually helped transport the heavily bleeding student to the PCEA Kikuyu Mission Hospital.

Medical teams at the facility performed emergency surgeries and kept him under intensive care for months as his family pleaded for public assistance to cover mounting medical bills.

Despite undergoing extensive treatments, the damage to his vital internal organs proved too severe to overcome.

Following the April attack, detectives from the Kabete Police Station swiftly tracked down and arrested the minor suspect.

The assailant had initially been processed to face charges of attempted murder or causing grievous bodily harm while the victim remained hospitalized. Police say the suspect was arraigned and released on cash bail.

However, following the formal post-mortem update by Dr. Oduor linking the death to the assault, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is expected to upgrade the criminal charges against the suspect to murder.

The tragic loss of the young prefect has ignited widespread outrage and intense scrutiny across social media, with parents and community members questioning the security protocols in public day schools.
