MP resigns after drink-driving incident, says he has quit drinking alcohol

Mbonimana followed his resignation with an apology to President Paul Kagame on Tuesday, vowing that he has decided to quit drinking alcohol.

On his Twitter account, he further affirmed that he will be committed to serving whatever role he will be assigned to if Mr Kagame deems fit.

“From the bottom of my heart, I apologize to the President of the Republic and the general public,” he wrote.

“It was wrong of me to drive under the influence of alcohol. I have decided to quit drinking in this regard. Accept my plea. If entrusted, I am committed to fulfill any other duties.”

According to Rwanda's New Times, Mbonimana had been caught a couple violating traffic rules and kept on walking away as he enjoyed immunity from his parliamentary position.

"His resignation came after President Paul Kagame expressed concerns over a lawmaker whose name constantly appeared in police reports for drunk driving and was always let free because he enjoys immunity as a member of parliament," reports New Times.

Mboinimana however told the press that drink-driving is not the reason why he resigned, citing personal reasons which he will make public.

“There will be a time when I will talk about that but for now I am not commenting about it,” he said in an interview.
