The Ministry of Health (MoH) announced Monday a collaboration with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to improve pandemic preparedness and response in remote and underserved areas.
In a statement to the media following the receipt of an IGAD mobile laboratory donation, the Ministry of Health stated that the collaboration will play an important role in improving diagnostic capabilities while making essential tests more accessible and affordable.
"This contribution will strengthen outbreak investigation and healthcare access, particularly in remote regions.," Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards said.
"The laboratory will also support our National Public Health Laboratory and National Public Health Institute in their preparedness and response efforts during health emergencies.,"
The handover ceremony, held on Monday at the Afya House in Nairobi, was a watershed moment in ongoing efforts to improve diagnostic services nationwide.
Dr Fatuma Adan of Health Mission Kenya and Mr. Ondrej Simek, the EU Deputy Head of Delegation, handed over the mobile laboratory to Ms. Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards.
The PS said the mobile lab, which can perform a wide range of diagnostic tests, including those required for outbreak investigations and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) initiatives, is expected to reduce disparities in healthcare provision between urban and rural areas.
PS Muthoni thanked the EU-IGAD for their long-standing support, especially during difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
She also praised the collaborative efforts of various partners, including IGAD and EU member states, to strengthen Kenya's healthcare infrastructure.
