DCI recover stolen solar panels from Deputy County Commissioner’s farm

Solar panels recovered from Angela Makau's farm.

23 solar panels belonging to Ngatho Borehole Community Water Project under the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation were last week recovered from a farm in Matungulu Sub County, Machakos County.

According to a police report, the farm is the rural residence of Angela Makau, a Deputy County Commissioner of Ithanga Sub County.

The solar panels, which were part of a larger project by National Government to provide water to Ithanga area were reported to have been stolen in August 2022, bringing the project to a halt.

The Water Supply Project situated at Ngatho – Kakuzi Ward, which has a yield of 25,000 litres per hour was meant to serve more than 10,000 residents.

The case was then reported at the Ithanga Police post where it was later pursued by the DCI office.

During the investigations, information volunteered by residents implicated Makau in the loss of the panels.

DCI officer Kirwara Nahum Muli says the information volunteered by residents was that Makau's official vehicle ferried the panels in the escort of police officers.

During the raid at her home in Machakos, detectives found the solar panels awaiting installation, and her farm hand.

The leadership of the area represented by area Kakuzi MCA Stephen Muigai has commended the DCI following the recovery and arrest of one person.

He however called on the government to bring to book the said administrator, noting that it is a criminal offence and a big embarrassment for a person holding public office to turn against the interests to protect the public and properties.
