DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa has allayed fears that the Azimio la Umoja Coalition will be weakened if its chief principal Raila Odinga takes the African Union Commission chairmanship.

According to Wamalwa, Raila’s main job will be in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but his foot soldiers will continue with his work back in Kenya.

“You are worried that Azimio might break. Today, I assure you that Azimio is intact, Baba (Raila) is our captain,” Wamalwa remarked.

“As he goes to Addis, he has left a strong team of Eugene, Wajackoyah, Kalonzo, Karua… let not your hearts be troubled, we will continue fighting for you and pushing Zakayo until he goes home in 2027,” the former CS told congregants in Kakamega on Sunday.

Since he declared his interest in the AUC chairperson position, there have been reports that the stint would mark the end of Raila’s interests in local politics.

However, a section of leaders have dismissed such talks, saying that the former Prime Minister will continue his active participation in Kenya’s politics.

"I want to remove any doubt for the doubting Thomases, that Raila's rights under the constitution have not been suspended, he has a right to participate in the political affairs of Kenya, both as its citizen and as a patriot," Siaya Governor James Orengo said on Saturday.
