Anti-riot police in Nakuru have erected roadblocks on all roads leading to the Nakuru Law Courts ahead of ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga's arraignment.

Njenga is set to face several criminal charges among them being supporting an organised criminal group.

Njenga had been grilled by DCI detectives last Thursday in Nairobi following accusations of addressing a meeting at Wanyororo area in Nakuru County on May 11, 2023 to "encourage support" for the outlawed criminal group, Mungiki.

He is further facing charges of engaging in criminal activities. He is accused of inviting individuals to the said meeting at Wanyororo area where he is alleged to have provided instructions connected with Mungiki.

He is also accused of being in possession of “a military backpack strap, property of the National Police Service (NPS) that is suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.”

His appearance at the DCI headquarters was however marred with running battles after police officers lobbed teargas canisters at Njenga's supporters who had thronged the premise to show support for Njenga.

He is also being probed in relation to the recovery of two firearms and more than 90 rolls of bhang found at a home linked to him in Ngomongo, Bahati.
