Kenya targets over Ksh.450B e-Commerce revenue by 2027, boosting job creation
Trade Principal Secretary, Mr. Alfred K’Ombudo, emphasized that the government aims to adopt international best practices to boost e-commerce.
This will involve improving digital infrastructure, enhancing online payment systems, and streamlining regulatory frameworks to support seamless cross-border trade while ensuring consumer protection.
Mr. K’Ombudo, whose speech was delivered by Mr. Timothy Were, ICT Director at the State Department for Trade, highlighted the importance of public-private sector partnerships in driving sustainable development, job creation, and improved livelihoods.
He also noted that e-commerce revenues in Kenya were projected to grow by over 6% in 2023, reaching an estimated US$ 3.5 billion (Ksh.453 billion) by 2027. “These figures highlight Kenya’s e-commerce potential and its capacity for job creation and poverty reduction,” said Mr. K’Ombudo.
Additionally, Mr. K’Ombudo revealed that Kenya is developing a digital services export strategy, aiming to position the country as a regional hub for digital innovation and exports.
The eCommerce Day East Africa, organized by the eCommerce Institute, brings together public and private sector leaders to formulate strategies for advancing digital commerce and the internet business sector at both regional and global levels. The event also seeks to accelerate the adoption of online channels by businesses and entrepreneurs.
Mr. K’Ombudo acknowledged the critical role of partners such as USAID, the eTrade Alliance, and the eCommerce Institute in developing Kenya’s e-commerce sector. Key initiatives supported by USAID include the Google Hustle Academy E-Commerce Training, Brighter Monday Kenya – Ebiz Kwa Vijana, and eCommerce Day East Africa. Other notable partners include GIZ, the Tony Blair Institute, and Microsoft Corporation.
