For Victor Ochieng Owino, a student at Kenyatta University, he defied the odds by turning a challenging situation into an opportunity for growth and success.
Victor rose above the hardships he faced after losing financial support from his older brother, who had been the pillar of their family.
In his second year at university, Victor took a leap of faith and started a simple yet innovative side hustle in Kilimani: a structured car wash.
Together with his friends, they pooled resources to invest in the business to fund Victor's education and contribute to their household needs.
When asked about his earnings, Victor explained that his income varied based on the type of vehicles serviced. For Uber cars, he earns an average of Ksh.150, while personal vehicles bring in around Ksh200 per wash. However, a significant portion of his revenue comes from the generous tips provided by supportive and well-off customers who recognise the value of his business.
Apart from providing excellent service, Victor emphasises the importance of customer satisfaction.
He revealed that in the event of any concerns or complaints, he engages in peaceful negotiations with the customers, seeking ways to improve or resolve any issues.
Furthermore, Victor says he maintains the cleanliness of his car wash, dedicating time every morning and evening to the cleaning.
This commitment ensures hygienic surroundings and fosters strong relationships with his co-workers and loyal customers.
While recounting his journey, Victor shared a particularly challenging incident that tested his resolve.
City Council officials, disguised as civilians, arrived at his car wash pretending to want their vehicles cleaned. However, shortly after, Victor was handcuffed and forcibly taken to City Hall, where he was accused of operating without the required permits, resulting in a fine of Ksh.50,000 on him and his partner.
The financial burden seemed insurmountable, but thanks to his loyal customers' unwavering support, Victor said he was able to settle the fine and secured his release the next morning.
However, Victor says his co-workers were not as fortunate and had their businesses closed for six months.
Despite the hardships, Victor said the business gives financial stability, allowing him to return to school and he eventually graduated with second-class honours.
Reflecting on his journey, he urged fellow young people to seize every opportunity that comes their way, emphasizing the importance of humility and being willing to engage in any work that supports one's livelihood. Victor's story serves as a testament to the power of creativity and perseverance, encouraging youths to establish themselves as creative forces within their communities.
