The handicap 11 golfer carded an impressive 38 stableford points to claim the overall title in a highly competitive tournament that attracted 232 golfers from across the country, edging out Nanu Hassanali and Father A. Kipkemei, who finished with similar scores but lost on countback.
Speaking after his triumph, Wachira revealed that the victory was particularly special because he had not been feeling well in the days leading up to the tournament. He credited his success to determination and consistency throughout the round despite the difficult circumstances.
“I am delighted with this win because I was not feeling my best before the competition. The course was challenging, but I stayed focused and managed to score well,” said Wachira.
Players were forced to contend with hard fairways and dry greens, conditions that made putting especially difficult. Despite the challenges, competitors praised the quality of the tournament and the organization by the sponsors.
In the ladies’ category, Linda Munyao produced a superb performance to top the field with 38 points. Munyao expressed her satisfaction with her game, noting that patience and accuracy on the greens played a crucial role in her victory.
The event also produced several memorable moments, including a near miss in the hole-in-one challenge.
David Mutai came agonizingly close to driving away with a Jetour SUV that had been offered as the grand prize for an ace. Although he narrowly missed the jackpot, Mutai walked away with the Nearest to the Pin award after an outstanding tee shot.
Meanwhile, David Biegon of Kericho Golf Club claimed the Longest Drive Men prize after showcasing his power off the tee, while Teresa Murigi earned recognition with the Best Effort award.
Following his victory, Wachira thanked the tournament sponsors, organizers and fellow competitors for making the event a success. He also praised the high level of competition, saying it pushed players to produce their best golf despite the demanding course setup.
The Nakuru leg formed part of celebrations marking Basco Paints’ 50th anniversary and continued the company's commitment to supporting the growth of golf in Kenya.
With the Nakuru event successfully concluded, attention now shifts to Sigona Golf Club, which will host the third leg of the Duracoat Golf Masters Series as players continue their quest for honors in one of the country's leading amateur golf circuits.
