Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Party Deputy
Leader Fred Matiang'i has condemned the assault on Ichuni Ward MCA Wycliffe
Siocha, describing the incident as an attack on democracy and calling for swift
justice.
According to preliminary investigations by police officers in
Kisii County, Siocha was attacked by unknown assailants wielding blunt objects on
June 4, 2026, while at a garage near Gusii Stadium in Kisii town.
The MCA is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in
Kisii, with investigators pursuing leads suggesting that the attack may have
been politically motivated.
In a statement shared on his X account, Matiang'i expressed
concern over the incident, saying violence and intimidation have no place in a
democratic society.
"Violence, intimidation, and lawlessness have no place in
our democracy. Every leader, regardless of political affiliation or opinion,
has the right to serve the people without fear of harassment, threats, or
physical harm. Political differences must always be resolved through dialogue,
debate and the democratic process, not through violence," Matiang'i said.
He urged security agencies to conduct thorough investigations
and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
"Ensure they are held fully accountable under the law.
Impunity only emboldens criminality and undermines public confidence in our
institutions," he added.
The attack has sparked political reactions in Kisii County,
with former Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu joining calls for the arrest and
prosecution of those behind the assault.
Speaking during a visit to the county police headquarters,
Machogu claimed that Siocha had previously raised concerns about threats to his
safety.
"Siku alitangaza msimamo ya kwamba yeye ameungana na team
ya Matiang’i na Machogu, amekuwa akiwindwa. Wametuma goons na wale goons ambao
wametumwa wamewinda yeye kutoka kwa nyumba yake, kutoka mahali ambayo anakaa…kila
siku, amekuwa akikaa ni kama mnyama ambaye anawindwa," said Machogu.
The former minister called on authorities to expedite
investigations and guarantee the safety of elected leaders.
As investigations continue, Matiang'i urged political leaders
and Kenyans at large to reject political intolerance and embrace peaceful
engagement.
"I call upon all leaders and citizens to reject political
intolerance and uphold peace, respect and the rule of law. Kenya's future must
be built on unity, justice and democratic values, not fear and
intimidation," he said.
