U.S offers up to Ksh.669M reward for information on four Al-Shabaab leaders

The U.S Department of State has announced a reward of up to $ 6 million (approx. over Ksh.669 million) for information leading to the arrest of four Al-Shabaab leaders.

The four are; Abu Ubadiah (leader), Mahad Karate (Amniyat Commander), Fuad Mohamed Khalaf (Financial Facilitator), and Jafar (Facilitator and Operational Planner). 

The department, in a notice seen by Citizen Digital, urged any persons with information on the whereabouts of the four to immediately pass it along through their tip lines. 

"Al-Shabaab's activities continue to threaten the peace, security, and stability of the region. The Department of State's Rewards for Justice program is offering rewards of up to $6 million for information on Al-Shabaab leaders. Call or text our tip lines via SMS, Signal, Viber, and WhatsApp," read the notice.

Here are the fugitives' profiles according to the U.S Department of State:

He rose to power in September 2014, after the death of former Al-Shabaab emir Ahmed Abdi aw-Mohamed (Godane). As the emir, Abu Ubaidah is directly responsible for Al-Shabaab’s activities, which continue to threaten the peace, security, and stability of Somalia and U.S. interests in the region.

He is believed to be in his forties and is a member of the Dir clan from the Kismayo region of Somalia.

Mahad Karate (aka Abdirahman Mohammed Warsame)

Karate serves as Al-Shabaab’s shadow deputy leader and has command responsibility over the Amniyat, the militia's intelligence and security wing.

The Amniyat plays a key role in the execution of suicide attacks and assassinations in Somalia, Kenya, and other countries in the region.

A reward of $5 million (approx. Ksh.558 million) for information leading to his arrest.

Fuad Mohammed (alias Fuad Shongale)

He has facilitated financial support to Al-Shabaab since 2008. He regularly organizes and holds fundraising events for the militant group.

Jafar serves as Al-Shabaab’s chief of explosives and is responsible for attack operations in Mogadishu. His face is unknown.
