Natembeya: Luhyas not interested in being Ruto’s number 2

The Western Kenya region will not accept a deputy president position from President William Ruto, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has said. 

Speaking to RMS vernacular stations on Thursday, Natembeya said the western region has previously held DP positions and has its eyes set on the presidency come the 2027 elections. 

“Right now, Luhya people are united. Regardless of whom you appoint, whether Oparanya, whether Wetangula, whether Mudavadi, they will not defeat Sifuna,” said Natembeya in an interview at Mulembe FM.

He added that Luhya people are aiming for the top position and are not interested in being Ruto’s number two. 

“Do you think a President can come from Sugoi and a Deputy from Kakamega? How would that work? That is how they lie to us, but I believe Ruto is desperate enough to do that. He will say that if he can get votes from Luhya people, then he will appoint a Luhya as his Deputy. As Luhya people, we are not interested.  We have had Moody Awori, Musalia Mudavadi, Michael Kijana Wamalwa as Vice Presidents. This time, we want the top,” Natembeya emphasized.

According to Natembeya, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna will use the United Democratic Party (UDP) as the political vehicle for his 2027 presidential bid.

Natembeya says Sifuna remains the only opposition presidential candidate with what he describes as broad support from Kenyans across the country.

The governor has also outlined what he says should be key priorities under a new government, including equitable distribution of job opportunities and the elimination of tribalism in key government institutions.

Natembeya further called for equalization of funds to be distributed equitably across all counties to promote balanced development.

On the issue of goonism and lawlessness, Natembeya accused the government of failing to take sufficient action against groups involved in political violence, arguing that the government has a responsibility to protect citizens and uphold the rule of law.

“We have held big meetings in Kitale, Bungoma, Nairobi, and we did not have goons, but when we went to Homa Bay, that’s when the goons came. And it is the Government that is encouraging lawlessness," he added.

On the 2027 General Election, Natembeya expressed confidence in the electoral process, saying he expects the presidential winner to be announced within an hour after voting ends.

He argued that prolonged delays in announcing results create opportunities for alleged manipulation and vote theft.

Natembeya also warned those planning to disrupt the 2027 elections, saying they would face a strong response from his political camp.

He urged political leaders and Kenyans to join UDP, describing it as a national party capable of bringing together people from across the country.
