Two fishermen died and two others were rescued after a windstorm struck their boat at Kagwa Beach in Rambira Location, Rachuonyo North sub-county on Sunday night.

Julius Odhiambo, 32, and Joseph Mboya, 50, drowned around 10 p.m., while George Nyandega, 30, and Charles Odongo, 43, survived after their boat was hit by the storm.

Kagwa Beach Management Unit chairman, Robert Ochieng Auma, explained that the four fishermen were casting their nets when a heavy rain-induced windstorm struck, causing them to fall into Lake Victoria.

The two survivors were rescued by other fishermen who managed to cling onto the boat. Unfortunately, by the time rescue teams arrived, the two fishermen had already drowned.

Efforts to retrieve the bodies are ongoing, with the fishermen calling for government intervention to assist with recovery.

Ochieng urged fishermen operating on Lake Victoria to exercise caution, especially during the rainy season when windstorms are common, to prevent similar tragedies.
