Two fishermen in Suba North constituency, Homa Bay County have drowned in Lake Victoria after engaging in a physical confrontation over a fish breeding zone in the lake.

Enock Opiyo aged 25 and 40-year-old Dancan Okoth from Uwi Beach drowned on Tuesday evening during a fight with their colleagues from Koginga Beach.

The area chief, Charles Ngoe said trouble began when a group of fishermen from Koginga invaded a fish breeding zone in Uwi, where fishing is not allowed.

Ngoe said five fishermen from Uwi Beach responded with their patrol boat to stop their colleagues who were already on a fishing expedition at the designated area.

The tussle started when the fishermen from Uwi requested their colleagues to stop casting their nets in the breeding zone but they declined and went on with their activities.

Amid the scuffle, the Koginga fishermen hit their colleagues' boat making it overturn. Three fishermen were rescued while the two died on the spot.

The search operation to retrieve the two bodies resumed on Wednesday morning.
