Two people have died, and one person hospitalised in a fiery Monday morning accident involving two trucks on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The 4am crash at Mto Mawe caused a massive traffic snarl-up lasting more than five hours as firefighters from Machakos and Nairobi counties battled to extinguish the blaze.

Witnesses reported that one lorry was hit from behind by another heading in the same direction toward Nairobi, triggering explosions.

Anthony Mwangi, a long-distance driver, criticised the government’s slow emergency response, saying one of the containers could have been saved had firefighters arrived sooner.

Machakos County police commander Monica Kimani confirmed the incident.
