Police in Mombasa are trailing a three-man gang caught on camera attacking and robbing two pedestrians at the Leisure area in Nyali.

The incident, which happened Tuesday night, saw the thugs snatch a mobile phone and other valuables before fleeing on a motorbike.

CCTV footage from a street in the area shows a gang of three on boda bodas trailing two unsuspecting pedestrians heading home on Tuesday night.

Within seconds, machetes are drawn, and the victims are cornered. The ordeal lasts several minutes as the victims are forced to transfer mobile money to one of the suspects.

“Kulikuwa na kelele tukasikia jibwa wanabweka, tukasikia commotion, tukaangalia camera, tukajaribu kupiga kelele ili wawache lakini hawakuwacha, walikuwa wezi wale vijana wa mapanga," said Stanley Katibi, owner of CCTV footage.

An area resident, Abubakar Abdullahi, added; “Walikuwa na guts za kutosha kwa sababu if they can ask toeni namba zenu, wanaangalia mpaka salio inaonekana, hawa hawaogopi.”

The chilling CCTV footage has since gone viral, raising fear among locals who claim this is not the first attack in the area in recent days.

“Insecurity ndio imekuwa nyingi sana hapa," said another resident, Rodgers Wasike.

Najib Mohammed added: "Tushawahi ripoti lakini walikuwa wanachukulia ni kama ni mchezo, wanasema polisi ni kidogo.”

Police officers have visited the scene and launched investigations. Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno says crucial leads have been obtained, and a manhunt for the suspects is underway. Authorities are now urging the victims to record statements to help bring the gang to justice.

“We have deployed heavily, we have put a specialised team on the ground, and therefore the operation is ongoing. I want to assure the people of Mombasa we will not allow these boys to come back," stated Nuno.
