Its visibility was bolstered by a recent beautification that has left the city residents wondering who is behind the stunning murals and what they signify.
A similar decoration was done on the Ex-Telecom House along Haile Selassie Avenue but it’s not related to the City Market’s project.
Dr Edward Ndekere, lecturer at the Department of Fine Art and Design at the Kenyatta University was the consultant on City Market’s project.
According to Ndekere, the project, which started in November last year and was finalized in April 2022, was funded by the national government through the department for Housing and Urban Development.
The city county government was a stakeholder.
Ndekere told Wananchi Reporting that a team of 21 artists and five experts accomplished the spectacular work intended to propagate what President Uhuru Kenyatta administration has accomplished.
“We chose City Market because markets are colourful and we wanted such a space to communicate the theme of president at work,” Ndekere said.
Adding; “The art on the market represents what has been accomplished in the Uhuru government’s four Big Agenda. We then added beautiful patterns inspired by African culture”.
The lecturer said more structures like the Ngong market and Wakulima market along Kangundo road will have such themed murals interpreting what the government has done.
The work he said was appreciated by the traders and Kenyans, some proposing such painting to replace the withering flowers on the columns of Nairobi Expressway.
“There is a lot of surface on those columns and instead of flowers which are expensive to maintain, we should have murals propagating our values, ideas and tourism,” He suggested.
Asaph Mui, one of the visual artists in the project, said many upcoming artists acquired important skills.
