The Dock Workers Union (K) has ushered in a new era of leadership with the election of Sulman O. Owuor as its General Secretary.

According to the Union, the election results, officially certified by the Registrar of Trade Unions on Thursday, marked a significant turning point for the organization as it seeks to move past a period of legal and financial turmoil.

Owuor is joined by a newly formed National Executive Committee, including: National Chairman: Amin Hussein Iloti, National Treasurer: Kibibi Omery, National Assistant General Secretary: Bernadette Bahati Musyoki  and National Vice-Chairman: Rua Mpate

The leadership change follows a ruling by the Employment and Labour Relations Court, which determined that the former General Secretary, Simon Sang, was no longer a person "in good standing" to hold office.

Beyond the court mandate, the new administration faces the immediate task of addressing a forensic audit report released by the Registrar of Trade Unions. The report highlighted severe financial mismanagement and significant debt stemming from the previous administration's "misuse of Union funds.

"The Dock Workers Union will be undergoing a lot of changes... to ensure that the dues remitted by workers are not misused by a few individuals," Owuor stated in his first official address.

"We shall ensure transparency in the operations even as we seek to ensure that this Union works for the interest of the members,” he added.

Owuor also pledged to re-engage actively with the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K) to ensure the interests of dock workers are represented at a higher policy level.
