The Commission for University Education (CUE) has summoned Dr Mukhisa Kituyi, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), over allegations he made against Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology over fake degrees.

In a press release issued on Thursday, April 16, the commission said it is seeking to engage Kituyi regarding claims he made during a radio interview on March 31, 2026.

During the radio interview, Kituyi alleged that a previous graduation list included names of individuals who were never admitted to the university.

"The graduation 2 years ago at Masinde Muliro University had names of persons who were never admitted to that university," Kituyi claimed.

"The first time their names were shown at the university is when they were on the print out for the graduation. They came with a gown, they got a degree and they went away."

The Commission noted that it had earlier taken note of the media reports and launched investigations into the matter, following a statement issued on April 3, 2026.

As part of the process, the commission said it reached out to Kituyi through his last known address on April 9, 2026, but had not received any response.

“The commission requires the engagement of Dr Mukhisa Kituyi on the allegations against Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology,” the statement read.

CUE has now asked Kituyi to present himself at its offices in Gigiri between April 20 and April 24, 2026, to provide further information and supporting evidence regarding the assertions made during the interview.

Kituyi was also advised to contact the commission through its official email to facilitate the process.

The commission, which is mandated to regulate, accredit and ensure quality in university education in Kenya, said the engagement is part of its oversight role in safeguarding the integrity and credibility of academic qualifications in the country.
