Spirited Lionesses show resilience in tight contest

Kenya Lionesses delivered courage and resilience on a gripping opening day of the women’s rugby HSBC SVNS Division II at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi, producing spirited performances in front of a lively home crowd.

Kenya began with a memorable comeback, edging Brazil 7s 15-12 after recovering from an early deficit. Tries from Janet Okelo, Stella Wafula and Naomi Amuguni secured a confidence-boosting victory that lifted the hosts and set the tone for the day.

The Lionesses’ second match against China women’s sevens was another tight contest. Kenya conceded early but mounted a late fightback through Freshia Oduor and Grace Okulu before falling narrowly 15-12 in a match decided by fine margins.

Their final game against South Africa women’s sevens proved equally tense, with Sheilla Chajira striking early and Moreen Muritu adding a late try, but South Africa held on for a 12-10 win.

Other women’s Day 1 matches at the same venue delivered high-quality action. Argentina women’s sevens edged China 20-15, defeated Spain 19-17 and later beat Brazil 28-17 in strong displays.

Spain women’s sevens bounced back with a commanding 21-0 victory over China, while Brazil also shut out South Africa 12-0. South Africa earlier edged Spain 14-12 in another narrow clash.

Across their three matches, the Lionesses showed growing confidence and attacking promise. With one win and two tight defeats, Kenya remains in the hunt heading into a decisive Day 2 where consistency and sharper execution will be key.
