Special Olympics Kenya pushes for inclusive healthcare

Special Olympics Kenya chairperson Dr. David Gome Lenga called for urgent action to bridge governance and fundraising gaps, ensuring equitable healthcare access for all athletes.

The event, organized in partnership with the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program at Lions Sight First Eye Hospital, offering free health screenings in critical areas like vision, audiology, and nutrition.

“Inclusivity is at the core of everything we do. Our athletes must not only compete but thrive in environments that protect their health and safety.”

He also highlighted the importance of addressing mental health concerns and preventing gender-based violence in sports, noting, “Mental health and safety are paramount. We need to empower our athletes to speak up and protect themselves.”

In addition to these health initiatives, Kenya’s preparations for the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy, are well underway. Kenya will be represented by eight athletes from Nairobi, who excelled at the National Games.

These athletes will join over 1,500 participants from 103 countries, competing in eight disciplines.

Special Olympics Africa Region president Charles Nyambe commended Kenya’s leadership in advancing inclusive policies.

“Kenya’s government has demonstrated exemplary leadership, ensuring individuals with intellectual disabilities are integrated as full members of society,” he said.

The conference marks the 20th edition of the Special Olympics Africa Leadership Conference, attracting delegates from 19 countries, who engaged in sessions on governance, fundraising, and inclusive sports development.
