Residents of Obambo sub-location in Alego Usonga sub-county, Siaya county have been filled with grief and agony after two little brothers drowned in a quarry in Yenga village on Monday afternoon.

The two children Brighton (8) and Arnold (12) who were pupils at the nearby Madede primary school drowned while trying to swim in the quarry.

According to the Assistant Chief of Obambo sub-location Mrs. Carmen Ombajo, the children are said to have been sent the shop before they branched to swim in the quarry that is currently filled stagnant water.

She told Ramogi FM that in the event, the younger boy slipped and fell into the deep end of the quarry before the other one followed to rescue him only for both of them to drown.

While confirming the incident, the administrator state that two bodies have since been retrieved from the quarry and moved to Siaya County referral hospital mortuary to await postmortem.

Mrs. Ombajo cautioned parents against going near such quarries and any other water bodies especially during this rainy season that most of them are filled.

She also warned roads construction companies that have been leaving quarries unprotected to desist from that habit to prevent further loss of lives.

The Assistant Chief complained that they have raised numerous concerns over abandoned quarries in the area but nothing has been done about it.
