A section of the Kisumu-Nairobi railway line at Kobigori area in Muhoroni sub-county, Kisumu county, has been damaged as a result of ongoing heavy rains.

The damage now puts in jeopardy the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) weekly passenger and train services to the lakeside city.

According to a police report, the base of one of the pillars of the railway bridge at Kibigori was swept away by ravaging flood waters.

The report indicates that the soil beneath the bridge, which was supporting the line, has also caved in.

The damage now poses an imminent danger and requires immediate intervention to avert any disaster.

The KRC metre gauge railway train makes a weekly trip to Kisumu on Monday and Friday, both for passengers and cargo.

Kisumu County has been witnessing destruction from the ongoing rains with sub-counties of Nyando, Kisumu East, Kadibo, Muhoroni and Nyakach being hard hit.
