The 24 died after a bus belonging to Power of the Word Church International, Mombasa, and a commercial cement tipper truck collided head-on at Kanga near Mtito Andei as the bus was reportedly ferrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony.
The Ministry of Roads, in a statement, indicated that reports suggest the accident occurred due to improper overtaking.
In his condolence message, President Ruto said that the antidote to eliminate road carnage is to run thorough inspections of all PSV.
He further urged motorists, particularly those operating vehicles of mass transportation to remain cautious on roads and protect lives.
"This is a painful and devastating loss for the families and for the nation. We share in your grief during this difficult time, and we pray for strength and comfort for the families. I also wish a quick recovery to all those who were injured," he said.
Injured passengers, according to Roads Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, are receiving treatment at Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital and Kambu Level 4 Hospital.
Meanwhile the Ministry has announced it will be pursuing "far-reaching" measures to address the increasing road accidents.
It noted it will hold engagements with Parliament, the Judiciary, the National Police Service, county governments and other stakeholders to strengthen road safety interventions.
A probe is underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
