Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers have shot dead an elephant that reportedly killed one person in Kamaindi area, Tharaka Ward, Kitui County.

The animal was killed hours after the fatal attack, following an outcry from residents who had raised concerns over its continued presence in the area.

According to reports, the elephant had been roaming the area for several weeks and was hiding at a farm belonging to a resident identified as Mkulima.

The fatal incident prompted KWS officers to intervene, eventually shooting dead the animal amid growing concerns over the safety of residents.

The elephant's carcass is expected to be incinerated as part of the disposal process.

The incident has renewed concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the area, where encounters between residents and elephants pose a threat to lives and livelihoods.
