Roadblocks, patrols as Embu braces for Gen Z protest anniversary

Security personnel maintained a visible presence in the central business district as traders cautiously reopened their businesses amid concerns over potential unrest linked to the commemoration of victims of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.

Speaking during a security patrol, Embu West Sub-County Police Commander Vincent Kitili said all major entry and exit points into the town were under surveillance, with officers conducting thorough checks on vehicles and individuals entering the area.

"We have established roadblocks on all major routes leading into Embu. The objective is to ensure that no criminal elements, weapons, stones, or other materials that could be used to cause violence are brought into the town," said Kitili.

The police commander assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to safeguard lives and property, urging traders to continue with their normal business operations.

He emphasized that the anniversary should be observed peacefully and respectfully, noting that both civilians and police officers suffered losses during the 2024 demonstrations.

The heightened security operation comes as memories of last year's nationwide protests remain fresh, prompting authorities to remain on high alert against any attempts to infiltrate peaceful gatherings and turn them into violent confrontations.

Business activity in Embu remained subdued during the morning hours, with traders opening their premises cautiously while public transport operators reported a lower-than-normal number of passengers.

Businessman Nahason Kariuki urged young people planning to mark the anniversary to do so peacefully.

"Let us honor those who lost their lives through peaceful activities such as candle-lighting and prayers instead of engaging in riots that could lead to more suffering and destruction," he said.

Boda boda operator Paul Maina said the uncertainty surrounding the demonstrations had kept many residents away from town, affecting business.

Security agencies have reiterated that while peaceful assembly is protected by law, any acts of hooliganism, vandalism, looting, or attacks on people and property will be dealt with firmly.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security officers, and report any suspicious activities as efforts continue to ensure the town remains peaceful throughout the anniversary commemorations.
