President William Ruto on Thursday launched the construction of the Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project which is expected to address the housing shortage in Nairobi.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Kibra Southlands, Lang’ata Constituency, on a sprawling 38-acre plot.

The ambitious project will feature 60 residential blocks with 15,960 residential units.

"Our affordable housing projects will eradicate slums in Lang’ata and Kibra, turning them into estates that provide decent living conditions to people," said President Ruto during the ceremony.

The development will include housing, two community centres, a primary school, 390 retail shops, and modern infrastructure for water, electricity, and waste management.

According to the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, the project is a mix of social housing, affordable housing, and affordable market housing, with a focus on improving living conditions and fostering community development. It is designed to reduce overcrowding and provide a better quality of life for Nairobi’s growing population.

The development will also boost the local economy by creating employment opportunities in construction, retail, and property management, along with an increase in property values and local business growth.
