The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved murder charges against students implicated in the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County that claimed 16 lives.
In
a statement issued on Tuesday, the Office of the DPP said it had reviewed the
preliminary inquiry file submitted by the Directorate of Criminal
Investigations (DCI) regarding the arson incident that occurred on May 28,
2026.
Following
an assessment of the evidence gathered during investigations, the DPP approved
the charging of the implicated students with 16 counts of murder.
“The
Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has received and reviewed the
preliminary inquiry file submitted by the Directorate of Criminal
Investigations regarding the arson incident that occurred at Utumishi Girls
Academy in Nakuru County on 28th May 2026,” the statement read.
The
approval marks a significant development in the probe into one of the deadliest
school fire tragedies in recent years, which left 16 students dead and sparked
renewed concerns over safety and discipline in learning institutions.
The
ODPP also expressed concern over what it described as a rise in incidents of
arson and other criminal activities in schools across the country.
“The
DPP notes with concern the recent increase in reported incidents of arson and
other acts of criminal conduct in educational institutions across the country,”
the statement said.
The
State prosecutor cautioned students and members of the public that those found
responsible for criminal offences would be held accountable in accordance with
the law.
The
DPP further extended its sympathies to the families of the victims, their
friends and the wider school community affected by the tragedy.
“The
Office remains committed to ensuring that justice is served through a fair,
impartial and evidence-based prosecution process,” the statement added.
“The
ODPP further reaffirms its constitutional mandate to uphold the rule of law,
protect the public interest, promote the administration of justice, and ensure
accountability where criminal conduct is established through investigations.”
The suspects are
expected to be arraigned in court to face the charges.
