In a spectacle of grandeur and vibrancy, Team Kenya jetted
back from Tunis, Tunisia where they emerged top after racking up eight medals across
different categories.
While their excellence in the continental showpiece
underlined Kenya’s prowess in the track the reception, they received at Jomo Kenyatta
international Airport was marked by an exuberant display of national pride.
Traditional dances filled the air, weaving a tapestry of
celebration as families of the athletes joined in, adding an extra layer of
warmth to the hero's welcome.
As the dust settled and reflections on the tournament began
to surface, Paul Mutui, Athletics Kenya's Competition Director, attributed the
team's stellar performance to meticulous planning and selection.
"Our careful selection process, rooted in the Sirikwa
Classic Championship, bore fruit as we assembled a formidable team," he
emphasized.
With trials slated for the imminent weekend to assemble a
squad for the World Cross Country Championship, Mutui exuded confidence in the
prospect of continued success.
Amidst the jubilation, Vincent Lagat, the senior men's gold
medalist, reflected on his triumph as "a dream come true," crediting
teamwork and rigorous preparation for his achievement.
"Months of relentless training since last December
equipped me with the endurance to endure the grueling race," he shared.
With his sights set on the World Cross Country Championship
in Serbia, Lagat remained focused on the upcoming trials, harboring aspirations
of securing a coveted spot on the international stage.
The resounding success in Tunisia saw Team Kenya clinch a
total of eight medals, with Gideon Kipngetich, Cynthia Chepngeno, and Vincent
Lagat claiming gold.
Notably, emerging talent Virginian Nyambura led Naibei
Mayabei and Joash Ruto to silver, while debutant Titus Kiprotich defied
expectations, clinching bronze in the U-20 men's category.
