Kenya Police FC has strongly denied claims
that their head coach, Etienne Ndayiragije, made provocative statements ahead
of their crucial FKF Premier League fixtures against Shabana FC and defending
champions Gor Mahia.
In a statement released on Thursday morning,
the law-enforcement-backed side dismissed as "entirely false and
misleading," a set of widely circulated quotes allegedly attributed to coach Ndayiragije.
The remarks, which suggested overconfidence
and direct dismissal of Gor Mahia’s title hopes, have sparked debate and
backlash across local football circles.
Among the quotes in question was one allegedly
stating:
"We are winning the league in the Shabana
game. Gor Mahia, with their current squad, can't beat my team. Even if the last
match were to decide the title, they have no chance. Not even a miracle can
hand them the league."
"We are going to make history and win the
league against Shabana so that we just play our last game with them without any
pressure."
However, Kenya Police FC insists no such
interview took place and that their head coach has not spoken to any media
outlet ahead of the two decisive matches.
“We wish to clarify that Coach Ndayiragije has
not granted any interviews to any media outlet. The statements attributed to
him are entirely false, misleading, and appear intended to cause unnecessary
distraction and discontent,” the club said in an official statement.
“Spreading unverified or fabricated content
undermines the profession’s integrity and misinforms the public. We remain
fully focused on our preparations, and we're committed to delivering our best
performance in the final two matches of the season,” further read the
statement.
Kenya Police FC are in contention for the FKF
Premier League title and have two high-pressure matches ahead: first against Shabana
FC, then the final fixture will be against Gor Mahia.
The law enforcers need one point from their
remaining two games to clinch their maiden league title.
