Tanzania ex-vice president Nchimbi kicked out of CCM party after resignation

In a press address on Wednesday, CCM Secretary General Asharose Migiro announced the party’s decision to register Nchimbi, who tendered his resignation as VP on Tuesday. 

CCM’s National Executive Committee reached a unified decision to remove Nchimbi for going against the party’s principles. 

“By unanimous decision, the National Executive Committee of Chama Cha Mapinduzi passed the decision that, due to conduct violating our rules regarding discipline and ethics, Comrade Nchimbi is expelled from party membership in accordance with our regulations,” said Migiro. 

The party announced Nchimbi’s expulsion from party membership. 

CCM Party has since recommended Waziri wa Nishati, Deogratius Ndejembi, incumbent Minister of Energy, to take the Vice President position. 

Nchimbi announced his resignation on Tuesday, weeks after it was reported that he had fallen out with President Samia Suluhu. 

In the announcement, Nchimbi said saying he wanted to respect the president's wishes. 

Nchimbi said he had made a commitment to serve faithfully and step aside whenever a change was desired.

"I also assured her (President Suluhu) that whenever she sees the need for another Vice President, I will vacate the position. I am fully satisfied, without any doubt, that Her Excellency the President desires change, and thus I have decided to fulfil my promise,” he stated in a public statement. 

The seasoned politician joined active politics through CCM’s youth wing, UVCCM, becoming its chairman in 1998 while working at the National Environment Management Council.

He was elected Member of Parliament for Songea Town in 2005 after securing 67.6 per cent of the vote. The following year, then-President Jakaya Kikwete appointed him Deputy Minister for Information, Culture and Sports.

Nchimbi subsequently held several government positions, including Deputy Minister for Labour, Employment and Youth Development and Deputy Minister for Defence and National Service.

He later served as Minister for Information, Culture and Sports before being appointed Minister for Home Affairs, a position he held from May 2012 to December 2013.
