The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) organised a prayer session and mental health awareness initiative at Subuku PCEA Church, bringing together teachers and local leaders to address the growing concerns.
The initiative seeks to encourage educators to speak openly about mental health challenges, seek professional assistance early and adopt healthier ways of managing financial and workplace pressures.
Speaking during the event, Nyandarua Governor Dr. Moses Kiarie Badilisha, who was the chief guest, urged teachers to prioritise their mental well-being and seek support whenever they experience emotional distress.
Ndaragwa Sub-County Education Officer Esther Kariuki said the region had lost approximately 11 teachers in cases related to mental health challenges over the past three years, underscoring the need for sustained interventions.
Kariuki called on teachers to break the silence surrounding mental health and seek help before their challenges escalate. She also cautioned educators against taking unnecessary loans and accumulating debts they may struggle to repay.
She urged teachers to plan their finances carefully and live within their means, noting that financial pressure can contribute to anxiety, depression and other psychological challenges.
Dr. Ian Gathaara of Ol-Jabet Hospital encouraged teachers to speak openly about emotional distress and challenge the stigma associated with mental health conditions.
He also emphasised the importance of specialised wellness and medical facilities capable of providing psychiatric and psychological care to educators experiencing mental health difficulties.
The unions, working alongside county and national government representatives and other stakeholders, are seeking to strengthen support systems for teachers facing burnout, financial strain and occupational stress.
Organisers said improving teachers’ mental well-being was also important in enabling them to support learners experiencing psychological challenges, given their role in children's development and education.
The initiative comes amid growing concern over the welfare of teachers, with stakeholders calling for sustained mental health sensitisation, accessible counselling services and stronger support networks within learning institutions.
They urged educators experiencing emotional distress or alcohol-related difficulties to seek professional help and support from colleagues, families and relevant health professionals.
