'Not a licensed pharmacist', PSK disowns staff who issued wrong drugs to baby

In the video, the aggrieved mother is seen confronting the pharmacy staff, questioning how she could have administered the wrong medication.

She maintained that she applied the medicine to her baby five times daily, strictly following the prescription instructions.

However, she says the drug reacted adversely, prompting her to confront the staff member, who later issued an apology.

In a statement on Friday, February 27, Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya President Dr Wairimu Mbogo confirmed that the individual captured in the video is neither a licensed pharmacist nor a registered member of the society.

The society has since called on the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to probe the incident and establish whether the outlet is compliant with licensing requirements.

It also urged the board to strengthen the enforcement of patient safety standards across all pharmacy premises.

"This matter should be approached as a patient safety issue. It presents an opportunity to strengthen systems, improve oversight and enhance public trust in pharmaceutical care," the statement read in part. 

"The public should be reassured that such incidents are not reflective of standard pharmaceutical practice in Kenya. This matter is being treated with the seriousness it deserves, and appropriate regulatory mechanisms are in place to address any confirmed breaches."
