Uganda's former Second Deputy Prime Minister and veteran politician General Moses Ali has died aged 87.

In a post on X by Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, the long-serving Adjumani West Constituency Member of Parliament died at Nakasero Hospital at 4:00 pm. He, however, did not provide the details of his condition.

Museveni described Gen. Ali as a political leader who made an immense contribution to Uganda.

"It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of our brother Gen. Moses Ali. He died today at Nakasero Hospital, at 1600 hours. Gen Moses Ali has provided service to his country for a long time, as a soldier and a political leader," Museveni stated.

"In the West Nile region, he provided the good example of being a big modern farmer. We shall miss his contribution greatly.  May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace."

Born in April 1939, General Ali gained an interest in the military in his early years and underwent training in Israel and in the United Kingdom.

In 1968, he joined the Uganda Army as a cadet officer and rose through the ranks in the subsequent years.

From Brigadier, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and then a four-star general in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).

As a colonel, he took part in the coup that led to the late Idi Amin seizing power in 1971. He later joined politics, serving as Minister of Provincial Administration/Interior under Idi Amin's administration.

After the collapse of Amin's rule in 1979, Ali reportedly fled to Sudan where he led the Uganda National Rescue Front rebels in West Nile. In 1986, he signed a peace agreement with President Museveni and has since served as a legislator since 1996.
