No hiding in numbers: IG Kanja declares individual responsibility for gang members

Speaking on Wednesday during the commissioning of a new administration block at Kiamumbi Police Station along Kamiti Road, Kanja said the police service is on a journey of automation aimed at improving service delivery to Kenyans.

"We are keen to ensure we have well trained and motivated officers. Right now NPS is on the journey of automation. We have a situation whereby you can be able to interact with the police station from the comfort of your home. We must digitise all services offered by NPS, as this will reduce bribery and corruption," Kanja said.

The IG also directed officers to deal decisively with those engaging in criminal activities, stating that individuals involved in gangs would be treated as individual offenders.

"When anyone of us decides to join gangs and goons, you will be dealt with as an individual, not as a group of people," he said.

Kanja revealed that five suspects had already been arrested in connection with the recent attack at All Saints Cathedral, and warned that more arrests were imminent.

"Juzi kuna wale walienda kwa kanisa pale. Tumeshika watano. You're going to see in the coming days more arrests," Kanja said.

He cautioned young people against being drawn into criminal networks, saying involvement with gangs would bring suffering to them and their families.

The IG said he had placed all levels of command on notice and given the Director of Criminal Investigations strict instructions to ensure criminals are dealt with accordingly.

"Criminals are criminals whichever side they come from. I want to urge you, please stay away from crime. It will bring you and your families a lot of sufferings when you join goons," he added.

Kanja said the goal is to transform police stations into centres of excellence, improving the relationship between officers and the communities they serve.
