Police Constable Jackson Konga has been sentenced to 30 years
in prison for the murder of his superior, Christopher Kimeli, at the K9 unit
in Nakuru two years ago.
The ruling was delivered on Thursday by High Court Judge
Julius Nangea. Konga was charged with fatally shooting Kimeli on the morning of
August 8th, 2023.
"Having reviewed all the relevant factors and
circumstances, the court sentences him to 30 years imprisonment. He has 14 days
to appeal the conviction and sentence as he will be advised by his
counsel," Judge Nangea ruled.
According to the prosecution, the two officers had a dispute
over the handling of two suspects who had been arrested. Constable Konga opened
fire, killing Kimeli.
The family of the late Christopher Kimeli has expressed
satisfaction with the court’s decision.
"Mimi kama wakili wa familia, nimeona haki imetendeka.
Hii ni kesi ambayo ilitokea na koti imetoa sentence ya miaka 30," Naomi
Kirui, family lawyer, said.
