A dynamic new force is shaking up the Kenyan chess scene. Founded just last year by visionary Henry Odhiambo, the Zaid Knights Chess Club has officially unveiled its grand mission: to become the country's leading chess institution, produce world-class players, and firmly place Kenya on the international chess map.

Despite being a young organisation, the club has already hit major milestones, rapidly expanding its footprint across the capital through a unique mix of community building, school partnerships, and targeted competitive development.

Zaid Knights has hit the ground running by launching its signature house training sessions, a program designed to bring high-quality, personalised coaching directly into members' homes. This approach provides a focused, comfortable environment for players to sharpen their skills.

Simultaneously, the club has aggressively targeted grassroots development by partnering with schools across Nairobi. By introducing chess to young students early, the club is actively planting the seeds for the next generation of Kenyan grandmasters.

The strategy is already yielding massive dividends. In just its first year, Zaid Knights students have made remarkable competitive progress, advancing rapidly from local and regional tournaments all the way to the National Championships - a major milestone that has caught the attention of the local chess community.

At its core, Zaid Knights views chess as far more than moving pieces on a board. The club operates on a philosophy that uses the ancient game as a vehicle for holistic personal growth, focusing on four core pillars: Strategic Excellence where they teach chess as a practical tool to develop critical thinking, long-term planning, and real-world problem-solving skills and Inclusivity & Community, where they build a welcoming, inclusive space where players of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels can grow together and form lasting friendships.

They also focus on discipline and integrity through instilling a deep sense of sportsmanship and character in members, emphasising respectful competition both on and off the board as well as elite mentorship where they support talented players to reach their absolute peak through expert coaching, competitive exposure, and peer-to-peer learning.

After enduring years of bullying in school, due to his being a silent and withdrawn student, founder Henry Odhiambo says that chess helped him develop confidence, discipline, and critical thinking skills, crediting it with changing the way he viewed himself and the world around him.

"Because of the positive impact chess had on my life, I made a promise to myself that after high school, regardless of where life took me, I would start a chess club," he says.

"I wanted to create a space where people like me could find peace, discover their abilities, and develop their potential through the game of chess. That vision eventually became Zaid Knights."

Despite the surprising success of the venture, Henry says that one of Zaid Knights' biggest challenges has been limited resources, especially during the early stages.

"Building awareness, acquiring equipment, and securing support were not easy tasks. Another challenge was helping people understand that chess is much more than just a board game..." he revealed.

Despite it all, he remains optimistic about the venture, given the encouragement he has continued to receive from family, friends, schools, members of the chess community, and the wider public.

'Zaid', which means growth, abundance, and prosperity and 'Knights', which symbolises courage, strategy, and movement, reflect the founder's vision of developing individuals who think creatively, overcome obstacles, and continue growing both on and off the chessboard.

"I envision creating more opportunities for young people through partnerships, training programs, competitions, and mentorship initiatives and would also like to see our players competing successfully at both national and international levels," he states.

Zaid Knights isn't planning on working in isolation. Moving forward, the club is heavily emphasizing collaboration, actively reaching out to partner with other chess clubs and institutions to advance the sport collectively across Kenya and beyond.

With a proven track record of taking absolute beginners to the national stage in under a year, Henry Odhiambo’s Zaid Knights are proving that they are not just playing the game—they are rewriting the playbook for Kenyan chess.
