Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura has been sworn in as acting Governor, replacing Mike Sonko who was impeached on grounds of abuse of office and violation of the Constitution.

Mr. Mutura will hold the Governor’s office until the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) conducts a by-election for a new Governor for Nairobi County in February 2021.

The law requires that in the event of a vacancy in the offices of governor and deputy governor the Speaker takes over for a period of 60 days.

The Nairobi County Assembly Speaker was set set to be sworn in on Friday but the event was postponed over what the Assumption committee termed as time constraints.

Mike Sonko became the second governor to be sent home by impeachment after Ferdinand Waititu of Kiambu County.

In his speech, Mutura promised to provide a smooth transition to the next government.

“I promise to bring together leaders whether you supported the impeachment or not that was your democratic right and no one shall victimize you on any basis,” said Mutura.
