Speaking during a press conference, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said the strikes being witnessed in schools reflect a deeper social challenge that requires intervention from the wider society.
According to Mwaura, the destruction of school property and rising cases of indiscipline among learners are undermining gains made in the education sector, making the involvement of parents, teachers and other stakeholders crucial.
“The unrest being witnessed in schools is not merely an education issue but a reflection of broader challenges facing families and society,” said Mwaura.
He noted that the destruction occurring in schools raises questions about the values, support systems and guidance available to young people.
He stressed that schools should remain safe environments where learners can pursue their education free from fear, disruption and insecurity.
Mwaura urged parents to take a more active role in shaping the character and behaviour of their children.
“While teachers and school administrators play a critical role in nurturing learners, the foundation of discipline, responsibility and respect is established at home. Parents should spend more time engaging with their children, monitoring their activities and understanding the challenges they face, particularly during adolescence when they are most vulnerable to negative influences,” he said.
He further observed that many challenges affecting schools mirror broader societal issues, including substance abuse, peer pressure, social media influence and the weakening of family structures.
Mwaura also cautioned against calls to close boarding schools as a response to the unrest, arguing that such a move would not address the root causes of the problem.
He warned that unless deliberate action is taken to strengthen mentorship, guidance and value-based upbringing, the country risks further erosion of discipline and social values among young people.
The government spokesperson called for a candid national conversation on the values shaping the younger generation, saying the rise in cases of indiscipline, violence and moral decline should serve as a wake-up call for the nation.
