Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has accused security and cohesion agencies of applying the law selectively in dealing with inflammatory political remarks, demanding the arrest and prosecution of Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.

Speaking during a church service at PCEA Rev. Samuel Marima Memorial Church in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, Maina urged the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to investigate remarks attributed to Kaluma.

Maina said the remarks, which have circulated on social media, could inflame political tensions and potentially expose supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement to attacks.

“We have seen what has happened in Homa Bay, where members of Linda Mwananchi have been attacked, with some hospitalised and others reportedly killed,” Maina said.

She questioned why authorities had not taken similar action against Kaluma despite what she described as serious and potentially inflammatory statements.

“When other leaders make polarising remarks, you are quick to take action and arrest them within 24 hours. Peter Kaluma has made serious remarks, yet he continues to walk free,” she said.

Maina also challenged NCIC Chairman Bishop Samuel Kobia to act on the matter, arguing that the commission should investigate the remarks and recommend appropriate action if they are found to violate the law.

“Let me tell the NCIC chair, who is a bishop: do what you are supposed to do. Peter Kaluma should have been arrested by the DCI by now and presented before a court,” she said.

She cited Article 27(1) of the Constitution, which guarantees every person equality before the law and equal protection and benefit of the law.

“We want Kaluma to be arrested and arraigned,” Maina said.

Kaluma has come under scrutiny following a video circulating on social media in which he appears to make remarks that critics have described as inflammatory. The authenticity and full context of the remarks, as presented in the circulating clip, have not been independently established.

Maina's demands come as the Linda Mwananchi movement prepares to hold political rallies in Homa Bay as part of efforts to build support for an opposition campaign targeting President William Ruto.

The movement is being fronted by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, among other opposition leaders.

The planned activities have been preceded by reported disruptions, with groups of youths allegedly blocking sections of roads leading to Homa Bay town where the movement was scheduled to hold meetings.

The developments have heightened political tensions in the county and renewed calls for security agencies to ensure political activities are conducted peacefully.

Maina's call for action against Kaluma adds to growing scrutiny of political rhetoric as parties and political movements intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
