Felisita Mugo made history after she became the first Kenyan
female professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter despite losing her flyweight
division bout against Peruvian international Nicole Van Wyk at EFC Performance
Institute Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa, on Monday.
With a fight record of 6 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses, Mugo is
proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the ring, and the nation of Kenya
is watching.
The match started intensely, with Wyk comfortably dominating the first round, and she managed to pin Mugo to the ground on multiple
occasions as she sought a tap-out win.
Despite Wyk’s numerous take-downs, Mugo showed a lot of
promise and grit as she countered and dealt blows to Nicole Wyk throughout the
fight.
The two fighters sparred back and forth, with the Peruvian international
dominating and gaining ground on Mugo up until she performed a swift grappling
take-down move followed by several repeated jabs to the head, resulting in the
referee calling the fight in Nicole Wyk’s favor.
In a see-saw encounter, the prodigy landed 27/54 strikes compared
to Wyk’s 44/64 to secure a win within 2 and a half minutes of the second round.
She was undoubtedly a strong contender all the while, and the
MMA nation and the world are taking notice.
Mugo’s previous fight was against Annet Kiiza from Uganda, which
she won by unanimous decision.
While her next fight date hasn’t yet been confirmed, her
growing fanbase is looking forward to seeing what she has in store for them as they
watch her career explode.
She implored her fans to “believe in me” as she navigates the tricky and competitive MMA landscape, becoming the first woman to turn
pro.
