After winning the 2022 National Rugby Sevens Circuit title, Menengai Oilers will be shifting focus to the Kenya Cup where they hope to replicate the good performance they had in the circuit.

Oilers finished second in last year's Kenya Cup losing the title to Kabras Sugar and coach Gibson Weru is confident they will lift the trophy this term.

"The boys have tasted victory with already two trophies in the Prinsloo Sevens and the overall title, so we now want to win the Kenya Cup this season," said Weru.

"We have been in the finals two times losing last season to Kabras Sugar and KCB RFC in 2018, now we've learned how to play in the finals and I believe this year's trophy is ours to lose," added Weru.

He went on: "For us shifting from Sevens to 15s is easier since the players who won the series are the same players playing in the Kenya Cup.”

The Nakuru-based side lost to Kabras Sugar in Kakamega Sevens despite winning the overall title, Weru noting that they 'learned some lessons from the loss'.

"Kabras had an experienced side after the return of Kubu and Tanga who were with the national team in France, but we learned a lesson from the loss and going to the pre season we're going to work on our mistakes in Kakamega," observed Weru.

According to Weru, the 2022 circuit has been ‘very competitive’ with each leg having a different winner.

"The standards of rugby have really improved and that can be seen on the pitch, having different winners shows you how teams are working and learning the game," said Weru.

Menengai Oilers won the circuit with 113 points, eight points ahead of KCB RFC.
