With the final 14-player squad now confirmed, Malkia Strikers are turning their attention to a bigger target, that is securing Kenya’s place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Kenya Volleyball Federation President Paul Bitok says the selected players are not only being assembled for the upcoming African championship but will form part of the national team setup towards the next Olympic Games.

He said that the announcement gave the team a clearer direction as Kenya prepares for the African Nations Volleyball Championship, which serves as part of the qualification pathway to the Los Angeles Olympics.

“This announcement will play a major role in giving the team a direction to follow and all of them will remain the team for Malkia Strikers until LA 2028,” said Bitok.

Bitok also added that competition for places was particularly tough among the outside hitters, with experienced players having to fight for positions alongside younger talent.

Head coach Geoffrey Omondi says the team is now focused on turning the squad's preparations into an Olympic qualification push.

“The team is ready to compete at the highest level so that we qualify for the Olympics, which is our ultimate goal,” said Omondi.

He added that the challenge will be tougher with several African teams chasing the same Olympic opportunity.

“Everybody is bringing their best in Africa because everybody wants to go to the Olympics. But ultimately, only one team will go, and at the end of the competition, we want that team to be Kenya,” he said.

The coach is also looking ahead to the role the technical bench will play as the team moves into competition.

“The girls are ready to play and the technical bench is ready to give fruitful instructions,” Omondi said.

The final squad includes captain Mercy Moim, assistant captain Gladys Ekaru, senior players Belinda Barasa and Lorine Chebet, as well as newcomers Maryann Sokoyo, Daisy Leting and Josephine Wafula.

Melisa Akinyi and Sharon Arusei are also part of the squad.
